Pyjama was a sweetheart, always ready to jump over anything I asked her to, and she let me get comfortable with the different fences and obstacles. I rode Pyjama and Gandalf – both were kind and a lot of fun. The fireplace was always prepared for us to light a fire after dinner and gather on the couches with a glass of wine and talk about the day’s cross country adventures. Nora and John went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. The horses were all rock stars, the accommodation was everything I could have asked for, the scenery was beautiful and the food was amazing. The whole trip was challenging, entertaining, enlightening and a ton of fun.’ She is a fabulous rider and a natural hostess, funny, inclusive, kind and helpful.

He’s extremely capable and professional and made us feel safe at all times. Simon is perhaps the most gifted trip leader I’ve ever met, and I have taken dozens of hiking, cycling and kayaking trips and multiple African safaris. We loved the long canters on the open plains, and crossing the Mara just downstream from the crocodiles was amazing. The lion and elephant encounters on horseback were extraordinary. He climbed in and out of the many gullies gently, but without hesitation. I rode Alfredo, a wonderful, very willing horse with a smooth canter. The camps were wonderful and the food was delicious. The entire trip, from the pick up at our hotel at the start to the drop off at the end, was professionally run. ‘This was an outstanding adventure travel experience. I for one value the ‘guarantee’ that comes from booking with Globetrotting: we always know the rides have been tested and are of a high standard, and we know that the horses, guides, accommodations and experiences are solid.

The great thing about the horses on this trip is that they are are trained to be independent, and we are shown how to ride them that way. Nothing felt orchestrated we rolled with each day as it came: finding new paths, meeting farmers and their curious kids, watching shearers at work, talking to colourful locals, swimming at the river and spending time with the family dogs. I kept thinking, ‘this is the best day’, but every day brought surprises and variety in terrain, views and experiences. Everyone at River Valley made my experience that much richer.

It felt like a great privilege to spend such incredible time with four generations of their family, from the seniors down to the great grand kids. I can’t even think of words to describe Nicola, Janey and their wonderful family. ‘This ride really gives both kiwis and overseas visitors a chance to immerse themselves in a slice of kiwi life that not everyone has access to, or even knows about.
